Autism, also called autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a condition that affects how a person thinks, learns, and relates to other people. Autism starts in childhood and lasts throughout life. Because it is a spectrum, each person with autism is different. Some need only a little help, while others may need a lot of support. Elmer and Mrs. Lang are autistic.

Characteristics

[edit]
  • Differences in talking and communication
  • Finding it harder to make friends or join groups
  • Liking routines and predictability
  • Being sensitive to sounds, lights, or touch
  • Having strong interests in certain topics
  • Repeating actions or movements

Autism as a spectrum

[edit]

Autism is called a spectrum because it looks different for each person.

  • Some autistic people can live independently.
  • Others may need daily support or may not speak.
  • Abilities vary: one person may struggle with talking but be very good at remembering facts, while another may speak well but find social situations confusing.

Causes and diagnosis

[edit]

Autism is something people are born with. Scientists think genes and brain development play a role. Doctors and specialists diagnose autism by looking at how a child communicates, plays, and reacts to others.

Support

[edit]

There is no cure for autism, but therapies and support can help. Early help often makes a big difference. Autistic people may have strengths such as strong memory, creativity, or unique problem‑solving skills. With understanding and acceptance, autistic people can go to school, work, and enjoy friendships.
